You call and describe the problem, a technician comes out and finds the fault, and you get the repair price before any work is done. You decide whether to go ahead. The cost mainly depends on which part has failed, whether it's on the truck, and whether the job involves the sealed refrigerant system.
What happens when you call
Tell us the brand, what it's doing ("freezer fine, fridge warm", "leaking under the front", "beeping and flashing") and when it started. The model number helps a lot. It's on a label inside the fresh-food section. We answer 24/7, and a real person picks up. If it's an emergency, say so.

The diagnosis
The technician checks the fridge, tests the part the symptoms point to, and tells you what's wrong in plain words. A good diagnosis confirms the fault rather than swapping parts until something works. Repair forums are full of people who replaced a heater and a thermostat and still had the problem a week later.
The price, before any work
You hear the repair price before anything is fixed. If you say no, you only pay for the visit and diagnosis. Ask when you call what the visit fee is and whether it goes toward the repair.
What decides the cost
- Which part failed. Fans, defrost heaters, thermostats, sensors, door switches, water valves and door seals are the smaller jobs. Control boards cost more.
- Sealed-system work. Anything involving refrigerant, like a leak or a compressor, is the big job. The technician should tell you clearly if that's what it is.
- Parts on hand. Common parts may be on the truck. Others have to be ordered, which can mean a second visit.
- The fridge itself. Built-in and high-end models take longer to pull out and work on.
Questions worth asking on the phone
- Is there a charge for the visit, and does it go toward the repair?
- When do I pay, and how?
- Can you tell me who is coming?
- Is there a warranty on the repair?
- Do you take home warranty jobs?
It's fine to say you need to talk it over with someone at home first. This page is a good one to send them.
Is it worth fixing?
Most callers would rather keep the fridge they have ("I'd really like to keep this refrigerator going"). On most fridges, the common faults are the smaller repairs above. Where a repair comes close to the cost of the fridge, usually a sealed-system job on an old unit, the technician should tell you straight so you can decide.
