Fridge beeping or display flashing: what the alarm means

Short answer

A beeping fridge is telling you one of three things: a door or drawer is open, the inside got too warm (often after a power cut), or it has stored a fault code. Close everything first. If it keeps beeping with the doors shut, read what the display says and look it up for your brand.

Door alarms

Most fridges beep when a door or drawer has been open for a few minutes. Whirlpool, for example, sounds its door ajar alarm after 5 minutes and repeats it every 2 minutes until the door closes. If it beeps with every door shut, look for something stopping a door or freezer drawer from sealing: a shelf, a bin, a bag of ice. If nothing is in the way, the door switch or the seal may be the problem.

Temperature and power alarms

A "temperature has risen" alarm means it really has. Check with a thermometer: the fridge should be 40°F or below and the freezer 0°F or below. After an outage many fridges beep and show an alert. Whirlpool's PO and three beeps mean the freezer got to 18°F or warmer. Acknowledge it, then check your food.

If it's beeping because it's warm and the power hasn't been off, that's a cooling fault, not an alarm problem.

Fault codes

Flashing letters and numbers are fault codes. A few common ones:

  • LG Er FF / Er rF: a fan isn't running, usually because of ice.
  • Samsung 21E / 22E: freezer or fridge fan error. OF OF is Cooling Off mode, not a fault.
  • Frigidaire SY EF: the evaporator fan circuit.
  • GE Profile: beeps for a door ajar, and on some models for a possible water leak.

Our brand pages list more, in the manufacturer's own words. Samsung asks owners not to unplug the fridge or keep pressing buttons to clear a code unless its instructions say to.

"It's the main brain"

Callers sometimes suspect the control panel, or "the computer" in the fridge. Sometimes they're right. But a code that points to a fan or a sensor is usually exactly that. A good diagnosis checks the part the code names before blaming the board, because the board is the expensive guess.

When to call now

  • It beeps with all doors closed and the inside is warming
  • A fault code comes back after a reset
  • The display is flashing and the fridge has stopped cooling
