Freezer works but the fridge is warm: what's wrong?

Short answer

On most fridges the cold is made behind the freezer wall and blown into the fridge side by a fan. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, that cold air isn't getting through: usually the coil has frosted over because the defrost failed, the evaporator fan has stopped, or the air path is blocked.

Why the freezer can be cold while the fridge is warm

It surprises a lot of people, but most frost-free fridges have one cooling coil, and it sits behind the back panel of the freezer. A fan pulls air across that coil and pushes some of it through a duct into the fresh-food side. So the freezer is always the first to get cold and the last to lose it.

That's why callers say things like "the freezer works fine, but the fridge goes up to 58". The cooling system may be working. The cold just isn't being delivered.

The usual causes, most common first

  1. Defrost failure. The coil frosts up a little every time it runs, and a heater melts that frost off several times a day. If a defrost heater, thermostat, sensor or control fails, frost keeps building until it blocks the air. Repair techs name this first more than anything else.
  2. Evaporator fan stopped. The fan behind the freezer wall can wear out, or ice can jam the blade. Some callers hear chirping before it stops, or just say "the fan went out".
  3. Blocked air path or damper. On many models a small flap (the damper) opens to let cold air into the fridge. If it sticks shut, or food is packed against the vents, the fridge side starves.
  4. Sensors and controls. Less common, but a failed temperature sensor or control board can stop the fan or the defrost from running.

What you can safely check yourself

  • Vents: move anything pressed against the air vents in the fridge and freezer. An overpacked freezer is a real cause.
  • Listen for the fan: with the fridge running, open the freezer and listen at the back wall. On many models the fan stops when the door opens, so press the door switch with a finger to hear it. Silence plus a warm fridge points to the fan, or to ice around it.
  • Look for frost: a white frost pattern on the freezer back panel, or ice in the vents, means the defrost isn't keeping up.
  • The fan at the bottom back is the condenser fan, not the one that feeds the fridge. It matters too, but it's a different problem.
  • Don't chip at ice with a knife or screwdriver, and don't take panels off with the fridge plugged in.

Why defrosting it by hand isn't a fix

Unplugging the fridge for a day with the doors open will melt the ice, and the fridge often works again. LG even recommends it as a first step for its fan codes. But if a defrost part has failed, the ice comes back, usually within days or a couple of weeks. Repair forums are full of people who did this two or three times before calling someone.

Use it as a test, not a repair. If it cools after a manual defrost and then slowly warms again, that's strong evidence the defrost system needs fixing.

Is it worth repairing?

The parts behind this problem (fans, heaters, defrost thermostats, sensors, dampers) are among the smaller fridge repairs. It's a very different job from a sealed-system (refrigerant) repair. The technician should tell you which one it is and give you the price before doing anything.

When to call now

  • The fridge side is above 40°F with food in it
  • It came back after you defrosted it by hand
  • The freezer has started to soften too
